The authors thank Prof. Mahmood Dhahir Al-Mendalawi for his interest and knowledgeable comment on our published manuscript entitled “Herpes zoster keratouveitis with hypopyon and hyphema” in the January–March issue of the Taiwan Journal of Ophthalmology. Prof Mahmood had suggested for the two of the herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) cases in our article to be screened for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. We understand that the concern was raised due to the susceptibility of HIV-infected patients to contract various viral infections including herpes zoster infection. Recommendation for young patients presenting with HZO to be screened for HIV was highlighted by Osahon and Onunu. Our article acknowledged both of the elderly patients as immunocompetent in the discussion and highlighted another similar case reported in a young patient with HIV infection. We regrettably did not specifically include in our article that both of our patients were tested negative for HIV. We hope we clarify the doubt raised in the letter to the editor and we welcome any future feedback.
